Pisa Cathedral
Construction began in 1063 and was completed in 1092. Additional enlargements and a new façade were built in the 12th century and the roof was replaced after damage from a fire in 1595. Just noticed the Cathedral looks like it’s leaning, too, in our picture. That would be us on tilt taking the picture from dome of the Baptistry!
Pisa Baptistery
Construction started in 1152 and was completed in 1363. This was my favorite space in Pisa. I’d love to witness a baptism here!
Tower of Pisa (Bell tower)
Construction began in the 12th century. The bell tower began to lean in the 14th century and by 1990 had reached 5.5 degrees. Between 1993 and 2001 they stabilized the foundation and lessoned the “lean” to 3.97 degrees.
All around us people were striking crazy Instagrammable poses where they we pushing on the Tower of Pisa or balancing in on an ice cream cone or even laying in the street balancing it on their feet. I decided, instead, to do my part of “holding up” the Church to the best of my ability. The Baptistry was unique and quiet compared to the throngs of folks outside the Tower.
