San Sabastian

Walking around San Sabastian all day without our backpacks was wonderful! Europeans eat dinner around 8 pm. Anyone who knows us, knows that we are not going to do that, especially after a long day of hiking! Today we had a nice lunch and walked around town. On top of the hill in Old Town is the giant statue of The Sacred Heart of Jesus watching over the town. We made the 1k trip of steps to check it out and had a great view of the city. Descending down the opposite side, we found a cool little bar and enjoyed some cider -which supposedly originated in the Basque region.

The second stage of this years Tour de France will finish in San Sabastian (July 2nd). It will be interesting to see if their climbs from Hondarribia are as tough as ours were (we were a little closer to the coast). The stage finishes in the Old Town square. The back of the building has the yellow jersey on it in above pic. There are pretty trees that turn pink in front of the building (pic below).

Great lunch today! Total redneck move, but I took iced tea in with me and they provided ice…not very common over here. It was very nice!

As the tide came up this afternoon, it destroyed the artwork in the sand.

San Sebastián Cathedral dedicated to the Good Shepherd. started in 1887.

Anyone have any idea who is depicted on the left (with the flag) in this pic, with Jesus and St. Sabastian? (please leave a comment, if you know or can make a good guess).

We need a little help here, too…

Again, to the left of Mary and St. Joseph holding Jesus. There was no information, and we couldn’t even guess who is on the left.
