June 19 (to Palas de Rei-14 miles), 20 (to Arzua 14.5 miles) and 21 (to O Amenal-13.5 miles)

19th was 14 miles in the rain. Contrary to popular belief, the rain in Spain DOES NOT stay mainly in the plain!

20th to Arzua. We are definitely getting into better shape. Ascents are no problem but downhills are tough on the knees and toes. This was Barb’s most painful day by far and away. Joe didn’t see a step and did a semi face plant which Barb reports sounded like a watermelon hitting the ground after being dropped off a three story building! There are no lasting injuries, with the exception of pride.

The good news was we came across several open churches. It was wonderful to hear all the surprised and grateful pilgrims crowd into them to offer a quick prayer and a donation. We read that a group is trying to organize volunteers for two-week stints to open churches along the Camino.

21st to Amenal. Today was non-eventful with gentle ups and downs. Because of the hard day yesterday, Barb switched to her Teva’s (with socks!) and had a MUCH better day. She still is uncomfortable with either a shin splint or some ?cellulitis from a bite of some sort. We’re watching it closely.

We finish tomorrow! 800+ miles to Santiago de Compostela. We are now inside of 15k which will make our final day sweet. Weather has been near perfect with only two days of rain. Morning lows in the mid 50’s and afternoon highs low 70’s.

Our last night on the Camino is in a really modest Pension run by what seems to be a highly disorganized but passionate family. They argue and bark at one another – but they sure can cook! We also included a reminder of our guilty pleasure throughout the Camino – Bugels! We think it’s the salt, but they taste so good at the end of the day.
