June 18 Sarria to Portomarin

We rejoined the Camino Frances yesterday for the final stretch into Santiago de Compostela. As of mid-morning, we now have less than a 100k to Compostela. We arrived in the quaint town of Portomarin this afternoon, and after climbing several flights of steps we entered the city gate and kept climbing into the central district anchored by the Church of San Xoan (San Juan).

We saw more pilgrims in the first thirty minutes this morning than we did during the last three weeks on the Del Norte. We walked and talked with some interesting folks for stretches of the trail today. Since we leave early each morning to catch the sunrise, we’ve gotten used to breaking through spider webs during the first hour or two of our hike each day. Today, others left earlier than us and did that work! Also, we’re used to packing food and water for the day, but on the Frances route, we found auberges and little restaurants all along the way. It’s a kinder, gentler route that is pleasantly challenging and will be a nice way to finish our pilgrimage.

We found a wonderful little couple-owned-and-operated Italian restaurant and devoured a tasty lunch. We were so hungry we forgot to snap pics, but it exceeded expectations once again!
