June 12th Santillana del Mar

Date

We took a ferry today and apparently Google Maps does not want us to be able to display our route, so here is our progress so far.

We saw a signpost on the Camino today that said 577 km to Santiago de Compostela.

We started the day on the coast and, once again, experienced a outstanding sunrise. Apparently a few pilgrims got a little too close to the ledge, so we made sure to learn from their fatal mistake.

We prayed inside the huge and ornate Cathedral of Santander, and we passed some of the most humble chapels in very rural spaces.

The ancient community of Santillana Del Mar was a surprise. When we walked into the town this afternoon, it seemed like a humble farming community. Then we rounded a bend and the roads were meticulously paved with rocks. The old part of town had many restaurants and small hotels. We ended up in the first Marquis of Santillana’s home that has been renovated. It is gorgeous -and has a pretty cool bar set up outside on the terrace! We decided against going in, but we were surprised to find The Museum of Torture. Neither of us was up to that level of heaviness today!

We didn’t walk with any other pilgrims today for the first time. The Del Norte route is much less traveled. We’ll see what tomorrow brings!
