It’s interesting spending the 4th of July away from America. It makes you appreciate the freedom we have and thankful for those in the past or currently willing to put their lives in peril to defend it. The US is far from perfect, but it sure is interesting to visit countries that don’t embrace diversity. ANYWAY, I digress…Portugal.
The hills make running here a challenge! We are rested enough from the Camino to start doing a little activity today. Joe ran, Barb swam and we both walked. Barb’s leg is still improving every day- swelling down, only slight discomfort first thing in the morning. She is breaking in new running/hiking shoes and walked five miles today with no problems. (She wore the lugs off the soles of her shoes on the Camino and started slipping especially on the descents.)
The sidewalks here in Funchal are very interesting. They are rock mosaic works of art with different patterns all over the island. They are so uniform we first wondered if they were painted. They are not! They are individually placed to form patterns. We don’t know whether to look up or down 🙂
We saw a statue of Cristiano Ronaldo today and it turns out he was born on Madeira Island.

We had a noneventful day, and our dinner reflected that! Bratwurst, white beans and left over fettuccini alfredo. Our little room has a microwave and single burner. After 45-ish days of eating out, it’s nice to be able to cook…even in a somewhat limited capacity.
